No, no; no m’he equivocat. No vull parlar de l’OpenOffice, sinó de l’Office. I no vull parlar de l’última versió d’aquest paquet ofimàtic, sinó de l’Office 2003, una aplicació que haig de fer servir molt sovint a la feina.

Per què? Doncs perquè, després de passar-m’hi més estona del que m’hauria agradat, he aconseguit (una altra vegada) que el corrector ortogràfic funcioni correctament. Resulta que el corrector ortogràfic que inclou l’MS Office corregeix els apòstrofs rectes per apòstrofs curvats; això vol dir que, cada vegada que corregeixo un text en català, em passo una bona estona saltant-me els falsos positius que detecta el corrector. El més greu de la qüestió és que les aplicacions de traducció assistida per a Windows que empro habitualment també fan servir el corrector de l’Office per detectar els possibles errors ortogràfics que hi ha a les traduccions. És clar, la situació era inacceptable. Ja vaig solucionar-ho una vegada però, des que vaig haver de formatar la màquina virtual, tornava a tenir el mateix problema. No l’havia arreglat fins ara perquè… no recordava com fer-ho!

La solució és tan senzilla que gairebé em fa vergonya no haver-ho recordat abans: només cal instal·lar el Service Pack 2, que es pot baixar des del lloc web de Microsoft.

Ok, sorry. I didn’t blog about GUADEC during the conference, and I didn’t blog about GUADEC after the conference. Shame on me.

I had such a great time and, for the first time in years, I actually attended a number of talks. Yay! I also had to prepare my talk, so I didn’t really have time to blog about the event. After a month, what do I remember about it?

PRE-GUADEC (at home)

Busy. Busy. Busy. Instead of preparing my talk about quality translations (feel free to download the slides and read them, and send me any feedback), I designed the GUADEC badge and the GUADEC booklet.

GUADEC

• Amsterdam is beautiful. It reminded me of Venice, with its many channels and its bohemian streets, but, rather than being a “museum piece” Amsterdam is a lively city, where cars are much less welcome than bikes.
• Everybody speaks good English in the Netherlands, even old people.
• Water is RIDICULOUSLY expensive in The Netherlands. As if there was a draught or something! I paid more for a bottle of water (1.5 L) than I did for a great recipe book which I have already used to prepare delicious Smoothies.
• The Design Thinking workshop was very fun and interesting. People loved it!
• Vincent FINALLY gave me the t-shirt he had promised three years ago. It’s fair to say that he was very nice and brought me two t-shirts instead of just one ^^
• The 1st GNOME Women’s Dinner took place in The Hague. 14 women attended, wow!
• There were many interesting talks, but it makes no sense to sum it all now because it was so long ago that I won’t remember them. So just visit planet gnome and read old posts; many people wrote about GUADEC
• People who attended my talk said that it wasn’t too boring. Plus I got these cute and comfortable slippers for being a speaker, wohoo!
• Gil and I got THE pants this year!!! :O For helping with the registration desk since GUADEC 2006, they say.  It was a huge surprise for both of us. Thank you very much, Board, we feel VERY honoured, really
• Thank you to the organisers and the volunteers for their amazing work. This was one of the best GUADECs I’ve been to:)

• Because I’m not at home yet.

After GUADEC, Gil and I took a train to Germany and we’re traveling around the country with our friend Keywan, who very kindly offered to host us at his home, also asked his friends to host us in different cities and is being our guide these days.

We’re flying to Amsterdam tomorrow, so we should start packaging our stuff… Among my stuff, there’s something very useful:

Tada! A multi-purpose recycled notebook. For those of us who don’t have a fancy iPhone, Nexus, Nokia, etc. this is great! I made one for a trip last year and I was so pleased with the result that I decided to make one this time as well. So I took a few reused items, put them together, a little glue here and there, and voila! It even has a pocket inside, so I can conveniently and safely carry my ID card + transport card + some money in my pocket, and look up the timetables I have previously written in it. Yeah I know, I can’t sync it with Tomboy, but I can practice my handwriting, which I rarely do!

I used:

• a cereal box (some organic muesli boxes have a very beautiful design, and yes, I admit that the first time I bought this brand was because I loved the packaging and knew it would serve another purpose)
• a gnome sticker from GUADEC 2007
• unused sheets of paper from an old notebook (for this notebook, I didn’t use sheets of paper written on one of the sides because I want it to be as compact as possible, so I want to be able to write on both sides of paper)
• a little piece of Velcro
• 1 staple

Instructions (more or less):

1. Use the cereal box to make the cover. If it is beautiful, you can use the outside. Otherwise, just use the inside, which is usually white, and, if you want, you can decorate it afterwards. My cover measures 10.5 x 13.5 cm (h x w). Fold it in half and there you go! You have a cover.

2. Now for the inside. Take a few reused sheets of paper (I recommend to use unused sheets of paper from an old notebook for this particular type of notebook) and cut them. They should be a little bit smaller than the cover (mine measure 10 x 12.5 cm). Then fold them in half.

3. Cut the pocket out of the cereal box too: 10.5 x 6 cm. For the bottom of the pocket, take a piece of paper, around 2 x 9 cm, and fold it in half. Then glue one of the halves to the inner cover and the other side to the pocket (in the picture below, the red cardboard).

4. For the sides of the pocket, take a small piece of paper, around 4 cm wide, and fold it in zig-zag (”accordion-like”) in 4 parts. Glue one of the parts to the top side of the inner cover and the other one -that would be part 1 and part 4-  to the top side of the pocket. Then do the same for the other side of the pocket.

5. Assemble the whole thing, staple it in the middle, decorate the cover as you like and you’re done!

6. If you don’t want it to open so easily, take a little piece of Velcro and glue one of the sides to the front cover. Cut a small rectangle out of a paper or (thin) cardboard rectangle, fold it in half (length-wise) and glue the other side of the Velcro to one of the halves. Then glue the other half to the back cover (Velcro inside!).

Done! Slip your credit card, money or anything else into the pocket, write your flight/bus timetables or other useful info and you’re ready to go!

I’m NOT ready to go, so I’d better start packaging my stuff… See you in a few days!

M’he adonat que feia molt de temps que no publicava cap recepta… Avui us en porto una d’aquelles que fan salivar només de pronunciar-ne el nom: mmmm… mousse suau de xocolata i ametlla!

Ja fa temps que miro de reduir l’ús dels ous i els productes làctics a les postres. Sovint, es poden substituir molt fàcilment i el resultat acostuma a ser boníssim. Fa temps ja vaig publicar la recepta d’un pastís de mousse de xocolata fet amb tofu tou. Aquesta vegada us presento una mousse sense pastís, perquè la pugueu degustar sense haver de buscar cap excusa; seria una llàstima poder-ne gaudir només a les celebracions… Ep! Tinc pendent de fer-la en forma de pastís, amb una base de pa de pessic, que segur que encara és més bona. De fet, la recepta en què em vaig basar és un pastís de mousse de xocolata i cirera del bloc FatFree Vegan Kitchen.

Aquesta mousse està feta amb gotes de xocolata i, com que el tofu és insípid i absorbeix els gustos de la resta d’ingredients, el gust de xocolata és intens. D’altra banda, la textura que queda no és esponjosa com si féssim servir clares muntades, però és molt lleugera (atenció: lleugera no vol dir “light”, eh!) i suau. Mireu de fer servir tofu tou, ja que la textura queda més suau que amb el tofu convencional.

Resumint, aquesta recepta és absolutament recomanable. Un 10!

Ingredients:

• 85 g tofu Kinugoshi (tou)
• 70 g gotes de xocolata
• 1 cda xarop d’erable
• ½ vaina vainilla
• 1 rajolí extracte de vainilla
• 1 grapat ametlles picades (caramel·litzades, opcional)

Preparació:

1. Poseu les gotes de xocolata al microones, a mitja potència i amb un rajolí d’aigua, i foneu-les.

2. Poseu a la batedora el tofu i els grans de la vaina de vainilla, i bateu-ho. Afegiu-hi la xocolata fosa i torneu a batre-ho.

3. Barregeu un grapat d’ametlles picades amb el tofu i la xocolata.

4. Aboqueu la barreja en gotets.

5. Poseu els gots a la nevera i deixeu-los refredar unes quantes hores.

Bon profit!

How a web design goes straight to hell

Si és cert que els clients han fet aquesta mena de comentaris a l’autor, déu n’hi dó! De fet, m’ho puc ben creure: a mi un dia em van “corregir” una traducció i el client volia introduir-hi canvis com ara nomès en comptes de només o n’hi han («N’hi han tres modalitats de…») en comptes de hi ha ¬¬

Va ser una tertúlia interessant. Cap al final van fer referència a les baixíssimes tarifes que sovint cobrem els traductors. És clar, com que ja ens ho passem bé (i només de vegades… hauríeu de veure els manuals de servidors de 300 pàgines que em toca traduir de vegades), com que és una mena de filosofia de vida, ja no cal que cobrem. Si és que ho volem tot… En fi, esperem que aquesta concepció canviï algun dia.

Quan em vaig assabentar que n’havien fet un espectacle i que el farien a Barcelona, de seguida vaig pensar que el volia veure.

Dit i fet: ahir vam anar a veure l’espectacle al Palau Sant Jordi. I em va encantar. És apte per a tots els públics, el fan en català (el presenta en Jordi Díaz) i és molt espectacular, divertit i pedagògic.

Si us afanyeu, encara hi sou a temps Hi ha una sessió avui a dos quarts de nou del vespre i una altra demà al migdia.

I és que aquest és un país molt lletrat; les grans empreses i les institucions públiques ho demostren dia rere dia. Per exemple, en donar-nos d’alta a l’oficina virtual d’Endesa, una de les seccions del formulari que hem d’emplenar és aquesta:

Certament, el percentatge d’errors per paraula no és gens menyspreable. Això sí que és encomanar el català i lu demés són tonteries. Ara falta trobar-hi un remei perquè, a aquest pas, d’aquí a no gaire la malaltia serà terminal.

Potser és hora que tots comencem a prendre consciència que els diners no ho poden comprar tot; que els humans, a còpia d’enganyar la naturalesa, cada vegada vivim més anys, però som tan egoistes que escurcem la vida del nostre planeta, la nostra llar, la de tothom, la d’aquells que han d’arribar quan nosaltres ja no hi siguem.

En aquest vídeo s’explica quin cost té el consumisme exagerat que es practica actualment als països desenvolupats i fa reflexionar sobre la cultura «d’ún sol ús» (utilitzar i llençar). Quin preu té la nostra comoditat (per als altres, per al planeta i per a nosaltres mateixos)?

No Impact Project. En Colin Beavan i la seva família es van proposar de viure durant un any intentant que el seu estil de vida no tingués cap impacte en la Terra. Van deixar de fer servir transports amb motor, van deixar de comprar productes importats, van deixar d’utilitzar aparells electrònics (llevat del portàtil, em sembla, que el carregaven amb energia solar), van deixar de fer servir paper de vàter, van… Un moment: què??? Un any sense paper de vàter? Doncs sí. Quanta gent al món no es pot permetre de comprar paper de vàter? Al web “No impact project” ens proposen de fer l’experiment que va donar a conèixer en Colin Beavan durant una setmana (noooo, no cal que deixeu de fer servir el paper higiènic). L’objectiu és reflexionar sobre el nostre estil de vida, i pensar si hi podem fer algun canvi per reduir la nostra petjada ecològica. Encara que no vulgueu fer l’experiment, val la pena de fer un cop d’ull al lloc web.
